Principal Technical Product Manager

I’m partnering with a well-established technology organisation that’s investing heavily in its internal engineering ecosystem. They’re looking for a Principal Technical Product Manager to lead the direction of their core platform services—work that underpins all engineering teams and directly impacts developer velocity across the business.

This is a highly strategic, deeply technical role focused on shaping the future of backend infrastructure, data services, and developer-facing platform capabilities.

The Role

You’ll be the product owner for a portfolio of foundational workload assets, including managed datastores, cloud-native services, and on-premise data systems. Your goal is to deliver an exceptional developer experience—making it easy for engineering teams to provision, manage, and scale backend components with reliability and speed.

You’ll work closely with platform engineering, security, architecture, and internal developer groups, acting as the bridge between technical complexity and user-focused outcomes.

Key Responsibilities

  • Define and drive a multi-year strategy for core platform and data services.
  • Engage with internal developers to understand workflows, pain points, requirements, and adoption barriers.
  • Build and prioritise a roadmap and backlog covering user stories, epics, and technical specifications.
  • Partner with engineering to scope solutions, align on trade-offs, and deliver incremental value.
  • Champion platform capabilities across the organisation through documentation, best practices, and enablement initiatives.
  • Manage the lifecycle of platform assets, including new technology selection, upgrades, versioning, and retirement of legacy systems.
  • Track metrics such as reliability, performance, developer satisfaction, and cost efficiency to guide decision-making.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional groups (security, compliance, finance, engineering) to ensure platform services meet business standards.

What You’ll Bring

  • 5+ years in product management, ideally delivering products or services aimed at developers (APIs, platform tools, infrastructure etc).
  • Strong hands-on technical background in engineering, SRE, or cloud/infrastructure architecture.
  • Deep understanding of cloud ecosystems—particularly AWS—and related services (e.g., RDS, DynamoDB, S3, IAM).
  • Broad experience across datastores: relational, NoSQL, and in-memory technologies.
  • Excellent ability to communicate technical vision and simplify complex concepts for varied audiences.
  • Strong awareness of internal and external technology landscapes to inform build/buy decisions.
  • A user-centric mindset focused on enabling engineering teams.

Preferred:

  • Experience presenting to senior leadership.
  • Advanced AWS knowledge or certifications.
  • Background in enterprise-scale or high-growth environments.
  • Experience working across multiple time zones.
  • Ability to manage competing priorities and execute methodically.

Package & Benefits

  • Competitive base salary + company bonus
  • Employer pension scheme
  • Flexible holiday allowance
  • Private medical & dental cover
  • Life assurance & income protection
  • Employee assistance programme
  • Monthly wellness allowance
  • Parental & adoption support
  • Stock options
